Grilled meats
'Tis the season of barbecues, picnics, and potlucks. Of summer evenings on the patio enjoying a juicy grilled burger or steak. Of friends and families gathered together around the grill to celebrate summer.

But did you know that grilling foods - particularly meats (but also vegetables as well) - can actually be harming your health? In fact, compounds found in browning meats have been linked to inflammation, advanced aging, and even cancer.

I know what you're thinking - "How can I ever give up my grilled burgers and brats?!?"

The good new is, you don't have to - as long as you make a few simple changes to your cooking habits. In fact, with these simple additions, your grilled meats will taste better than ever!

Homesteading Update: Summer At Last!

6/12/2016

Salad gardenOur beautiful spring salad garden!
I realize it has been a while since I've posted an update on the homestead. Partly that is because we've just been too darned busy, and partly because, well, it has been a slow and frustrating year when it comes to gardening....

Our early warm spell gave way to an unseasonably cold April and May, and between the cold and the rain, and then some dry spells, everything has been quite delayed. For some reason, I also experienced numerous problems with seed germination for both our peppers and melons - both of which I re-planted several times indoors before I got a good crop of seedlings to plant outside.

Luckily, it seems that summer has finally arrived! With a few weeks of hot weather, we seem to be getting back on track, and I finally feel close to finishing "the final frontier" of our garden - the last few beds that we did not get done last year. It has been exhausting work, and I'm ready to take a break from forking and shoveling dirt, but the light at the end of the tunnel is giving me the incentive to push onward and get it done!

Check out the pictures below to see how everything is growing so far...

The 5 Major Health Issues No One Is Talking About

6/5/2016

Presidential candidates
I read an interesting article recently about the 5 major health issues facing our country that somehow none of our potential presidential candidates seem to be addressing in any substantial way.

While there are other issues I would add (which I may address later in a follow up post), these 5 definitely do deserve some attention, and it is interesting that they are being so ignored by the major candidates as well as the media.

I guess it's because none of these issues have easy answers, or at least, none that will fit neatly into a campaign soundbite!

Why do you think these 5 issues are being neglected? And are there others you would add?  Read the post, then let me know in the comments below.

An Essential Piece of the Holistic Life

Spirituality
Well, I'm back from my birthday "stay-cation," and it has been a wonderful week! Busy - but wonderful. I got to spend time with some of my wonderful family, who came to see our little homestead for the first time, and also got to see some wonderful friends I had not seen in a long time, as well as spend some quality time with my wonderful husband.

I will try to keep it short today (we'll see how that goes), but wanted to address something I've been mulling over since this morning....

But I am going to tell you up front that you might not like this one....

Cancer: The Deadliest (& Most Preventable) Disease

5/15/2016

Cancer prevention
Did you know that 90% of all cancers are preventable? That's right - out of the 14 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year, only 5-10% are caused by hereditary factors. This means that 90-95% of cancers are caused by things that you can control.

So why the heck is cancer predicted to increase by 70% over the next 20 years?  If we know it's preventable, then why aren't we doing a better job of preventing it?

There are likely a number of reasons that factor in. From money (a big one), to simple ignorance of the factors that cause cancer, there are quite a few barriers to reducing the incidence of cancer in our modern world. Which is pretty sad, when you think about it....  We spend far more money on healthcare than any other developed country in the world, and yet we have the fastest growing rates of some of the most deadly diseases - including cancer.

So what are the causes of cancer, and how can we take preventative steps ahead of time, to keep it from happening to us?

Fitness Vs. Health: Why I Quit My Favorite Yoga Workout

5/8/2016

Yoga pose
Does your workout leave you gasping for breath? Do you curse at your TV while doing a workout DVD? Or maybe you even curse at your trainer, if you work out at the gym? (In that case, your trainer probably curses back, and tells you something like "there's no gain without pain," right?)

Well, guess what, real health isn't painful. And fitness is definitely an important part of health - but it shouldn't be one that causes pain. If it does, you really need to read today's post, and the article mentioned below as well.

I can tell you a bit about workouts that push you to the limit. And I can certainly tell you a lot about pain. But first, let me tell you why, this year, I gave up my favorite yoga workout - and why I don't feel bad about it...

Can You Change Your Brain?

Meditation
Between the craziness of the start of gardening season, and getting ready to launch a new website, I've been a bit overwhelmed lately, to say the least! I think it's time to revisit my meditation audios, which I have gotten out of the habit of using....

I discovered Holosync a few years ago, and went through the whole program over the course of about a year. I didn't necessarily experience all of the  benefits that other users have reported, but I did find some real improvements in several areas through simply listening to the recordings every night.

One big change was that I became less of a procrastinator. This did take a bit of focus, but I found it much easier to change this habit than I had expected, and now I rarely procrastinate anymore - I don't even think about it - I just get stuff done!

Bringing Home the Bacon: The Psychology of Shopping

4/24/2016

Shopping
As I was driving home the other day, the passenger's seat piled high with bags of rice noodles, soy and fish sauce, coconut milk, and other goodies from my quarterly trip to the Asian supermarket (stocking up for light summer Thai soups & curries!), I began reflecting on the peculiar pleasure that comes from shopping.

We all know it's fun to shop - heck, some even call it "retail therapy" it feels so good! Sure, there are some people who go overboard with it - even becoming "addicted" to shopping. (And I'm not making light of that at all - it can be a very dangerous problem that can get people into a lot of financial trouble.) And in some cases there are deeper psychological issues at work. But in general, we all just like to shop!

So why is that, exactly? What is it about spending money or buying "stuff" that gives us that little jolt, or "rush" if you will, of satisfaction?

How Will You Change The World?

4/17/2016

Abundance
Sometimes it can seem like the world is too large (and messed up) for one person to ever really make a difference. War, famine, poverty, natural disasters - how are we really supposed to change anything - and should we even try?

The media bombards us with more bad news daily, until we start to feel like we don't even want to hear about the world's problems anymore - it's all too much to deal with.

But what if things really aren't as bad as we think? What if, instead of getting worse, going downhill, going "to hell in a handbasket," things are actually getting better? And what if it's up to each one of us, as individuals, innovators, thinkers, and doers, to make a difference each and every day, that adds up to a new and better world in the long run?

This is the subject of a really interesting book I'm currently reading, called "Abundance: The Future Is Better Than You Think."

While there are many parts of the book that I don't agree with (particularly on the topics of food and medicine, where the book seems to be leading in the direction of more automation, less personal attention, and more artificial foods made in a lab - ummm...yuck), there is no denying that a lot of progress is being made in a number of areas which can potentially solve many of the world's problems.

Have You Taken the Cancer Quiz?

4/10/2016

Cancer quiz
As you might expect, I'm subscribed to a LOT of health newsletters. Not only so I can keep abreast of the latest in natural health news (and bring it to you), but I also have a great (almost insatiable) love of learning, and I know there is always more out there for me to learn - especially when it comes to the growing field of natural health!

Lately, I kept seeing emails promoting this "cancer quiz" over and over. At first I just deleted them, thinking it was some sort of scammy promotion. But eventually, curiosity got the better of me, and I checked it out - especially since one of the senders is someone whose materials I normally really like and trust.

It turns out that it is actually being sponsored by a really cool organization called "Quest for the Cures," and their cancer-related website and informational video, The Truth About Cancer, which provides all sorts of interesting information and resources about cancer, the search for a cure, and natural cancer treatments that show potential.
