I will try to keep it short today (we'll see how that goes), but wanted to address something I've been mulling over since this morning....
But I am going to tell you up front that you might not like this one....
Well, I'm back from my birthday "stay-cation," and it has been a wonderful week! Busy - but wonderful. I got to spend time with some of my wonderful family, who came to see our little homestead for the first time, and also got to see some wonderful friends I had not seen in a long time, as well as spend some quality time with my wonderful husband. I will try to keep it short today (we'll see how that goes), but wanted to address something I've been mulling over since this morning.... But I am going to tell you up front that you might not like this one....

Did you know that 90% of all cancers are preventable? That's right - out of the 14 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year, only 5-10% are caused by hereditary factors. This means that 90-95% of cancers are caused by things that you can control. So why the heck is cancer predicted to increase by 70% over the next 20 years? If we know it's preventable, then why aren't we doing a better job of preventing it? There are likely a number of reasons that factor in. From money (a big one), to simple ignorance of the factors that cause cancer, there are quite a few barriers to reducing the incidence of cancer in our modern world. Which is pretty sad, when you think about it.... We spend far more money on healthcare than any other developed country in the world, and yet we have the fastest growing rates of some of the most deadly diseases - including cancer. So what are the causes of cancer, and how can we take preventative steps ahead of time, to keep it from happening to us? Does your workout leave you gasping for breath? Do you curse at your TV while doing a workout DVD? Or maybe you even curse at your trainer, if you work out at the gym? (In that case, your trainer probably curses back, and tells you something like "there's no gain without pain," right?) Well, guess what, real health isn't painful. And fitness is definitely an important part of health - but it shouldn't be one that causes pain. If it does, you really need to read today's post, and the article mentioned below as well. I can tell you a bit about workouts that push you to the limit. And I can certainly tell you a lot about pain. But first, let me tell you why, this year, I gave up my favorite yoga workout - and why I don't feel bad about it... Between the craziness of the start of gardening season, and getting ready to launch a new website, I've been a bit overwhelmed lately, to say the least! I think it's time to revisit my meditation audios, which I have gotten out of the habit of using.... I discovered Holosync a few years ago, and went through the whole program over the course of about a year. I didn't necessarily experience all of the benefits that other users have reported, but I did find some real improvements in several areas through simply listening to the recordings every night. One big change was that I became less of a procrastinator. This did take a bit of focus, but I found it much easier to change this habit than I had expected, and now I rarely procrastinate anymore - I don't even think about it - I just get stuff done! |
