[Podcast] Uncovering the Hidden Dangers of Environmental Toxins

7/21/2024

Dangers of environmental toxins podcast
Welcome back! In today's post, I'm sharing an eye-opening podcast episode on common environmental toxins that may be impacting your health without your knowledge.

The truth is, in today's modern world we are surrounded by chemicals the human body was never exposed to for the first few million years of our existence. While our bodies do come equipped with amazing filtering and detoxification capabilities, the sheer number of toxic substances we come into contact with on a daily basis is cause for concern.

In fact, many modern maladies that we suffer from in the Western world may actually have some connection to various toxins. Certain chemicals have been linked to weight gain, diabetes, allergies and food sensitivities, mental illnesses, skin conditions, and, of course, cancer, among others.

In this podcast episode, Dr. Mark Hyman interviews Dr. Joseph Pizzorno—a pioneer in functional and environmental medicine—to uncover the hidden dangers of common environmental toxins and what we can do to protect ourselves.

Tune in to learn about practical detoxification pathways, foods that support detox, and effective methods to eliminate fat-soluble toxins. Plus, discover how reducing your exposure to heavy metals and synthetic chemicals can dramatically improve your health.

Free succession planting calculator
Well, it's July, which means, it's time for your July freebie! :-)

This month, I've got something a little different for you...

It's a free tool to help you extend your garden season and maximize your harvest!

While you may think of planting a garden as being a springtime activity, midsummer is actually a great time to plant some late summer and fall crops.

The best way to do this is called succession planting. It helps you get more out of your available garden space by planting a succession of crops one after another.

Yes, it really is that simple, but having a handy calculator like this one will help make the process easier to keep track of. Go ahead and grab your copy now, or learn more below.

Recipe: Avocado Pesto Zucchini Noodles

Summer zucchini noodle recipe
Well, we're officially in the heart of summer now - and it's a hot one! From the West Coast to the East, we've had record-breaking temps for weeks already - including here in Ohio...

And who wants to slave over a hot stove when it's 90+ degrees outside?

This time of year, I always look for really quick and/or cold meals that don't require heating up the house. I found this recipe recently, and it sounds perfect for a hot summer lunch or dinner! Plus, if you're anything like me, you're always looking for ways to use up the bounty of summer veggies...

This dish uses fresh zucchini (and/or cucumbers) and basil, and it looks easy and refreshing. (I haven't made this just yet myself, as our zucchini and cucumbers aren't ready quite yet, but I plan to make it as soon as I've got extras!)

This recipe is also raw, vegan, gluten-free, and Paleo (if you're strict Paleo, you can omit the miso and add an extra TB of olive oil). Check it out below - I hope you like it!

What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine
Welcome back! We enjoyed a lovely long weekend visiting our friend in Tennessee last weekend, including lots of lake time, boating, and swimming, which made the hot weather more bearable. We returned home to an Ohio heatwave, accompanied by a bumper crop of peas and raspberries and basil. It's shaping up to be a bountiful garden year - as long as I can keep everything watered!

Anyway, I realized the other day that although I frequently share information here from a Functional Medicine perspective, I've actually never discussed what it actually is - at least not in depth. Today, we'll dive into the benefits, treatments, and methods of the Functional Medicine approach. Check it out below to learn how this healing modality can complement your health journey.

[Podcast] How to Fix Your Busted Metabolism: A Deep Dive into Functional Medicine and Metabolic Health

Metabolic health podcast
One of the reasons I became so interested in Functional Medicine is that it is, as Dr. Mark Hyman says, "the medicine of asking why". Rather than simply evaluating a symptom and throwing some pills at it, Functional Medicine takes a curious approach and seeks to find out WHY you're having the symptom, so that it can be addressed at the root level.

This is one thing that I've found so frustrating in my own health journey, as I've started taking steps to begin addressing my chronic acid reflux. The conventional doctors I have met with so far seem to want nothing to do with the problem other than try to prescribe me prescription-strength antacids. (Which is obviously just a band-aid approach.)

Anyway, I'll stay off my soapbox for now, but I'll give you an update on my own health story - and the issues I've had with conventional medicine - later this summer. For now, I'll just say that I'm no longer content to just take the drugs, and soon, I plan to talk to someone who will actually start helping me look for the "why."

If you're dealing with your own chronic health problems that just won’t go away, it might be time to look beyond conventional medicine and dive into the world of Functional Medicine. In the latest episode of The Doctor's Farmacy podcast, Dr. Mark Hyman sits down with Dr. Casey Means to unravel the complexities of metabolic health and how it interconnects with our broader societal issues. This episode emphasizes the importance of looking beyond the status quo to reimagine health in a more holistic and effective way. Check it out below!

Easy sheet pan eggs recipe
Breakfast in the summertime can sometimes feel rushed, and with all the summer activities going on, who has the time to slave over a hot stove making pancakes or French toast in the morning?

This super easy sheet pan eggs recipe is just the ticket to an easy, healthy breakfast or brunch packed with protein and healthy veggies to fuel your day. To save time on busy weekday mornings, make up a pan of this on the weekend, and you'll have a quick breakfast-to-go during the week.

This recipe is Keto and Paleo, and Whole30 as well if you omit the cheese. If you're not trying to follow one of these diets, you can also put a slice between 2 pieces of bread and turn it into a killer breakfast sandwich!

It's also a great way to feed a crowd fast, so it's great for guests, holidays, or just using up excess eggs if you have a lot this time of year like we do! Feel free to substitute other veggies of your choice - just be aware that if you're using "watery" vegetables like mushrooms, zucchini, tomatoes, etc., you will want to pre-cook them in a skillet first to cook off some of the moisture before adding them to the sheet pan.

How to Live to 100: 7 Healthy Habits of Centenarians

Healthy habits of centenarians
I'm back today with a topic that has been on my mind lately as I draw ever closer to 50...

I'm talking about the subject of longevity.

When we're in our 20's, we feel like we'll live forever - even though we know it's not true! In our 30's, we may start to pay more attention to our health, but our "golden years" still seem so far away.

Once we hit 40, we begin to realize that we're already halfway through our lives (at least for most of us), and by 50, the reality of old age becomes more apparent - and more present - in our lives.

Wounds and injuries take longer to heal, we don't see or hear as well as we used to, and when we look in the mirror, sometimes we are startled to see that we no longer look like that innocent 20-something anymore... (Or is that just me??)

While growing older is inevitable, there are plenty of things that we can do to prolong a youthful state of health - both mentally and physically. This week, I'm sharing 7 tips for staying younger for longer. These healthy habits can be observed in all cultures where longevity is more prevalent than it is in most of the Western world.

The highest percentages of centenarians are found in a few specific pockets throughout the world, and researchers have been studying these so-called "Blue Zones" for the past few decades to find out their "secrets" to a long life. As you will see below, it turns out, they aren't all that "secret" after all...

Super Soil for Super Food: Free E-Guide

Healthy soil guide
Welcome back! I apologize that I wasn't able to get your monthly freebie posted last week, but I'm back today with a helpful little guide to celebrate the start of the summer garden season. :-)

Healthy food starts with healthy plants which start with healthy soil, so believe it or not, soil health might be where true health all begins!

You've probably never thought much about the health of the soil - unless you're an organic gardener - so this might seem a little strange to you, but when you think about where all of our food ultimately comes from (yes, even meat), then it just makes sense. How can you grow healthy crops - either to feed people or animals - if the soil is depleted, neglected, or lacking in essential nutrients?

If you grow your own food, soil health is probably something you pay a little more attention to, but even if you're an experienced gardener, there is still so much to learn about the world beneath our feet and how it supports life!

That's why I'm excited to share a brand new guide with you from the folks over at Grow Your Own Vegetables, who brought you the Superfood Garden Summit. This year's Summit is happening this week, so be sure to check it out, but even if you can't make it this time, make sure you grab your free soil guide below ASAP to help you grow healthier, more nutritious food in your own garden all year long!

Recipe: Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Jammy Eggs

4/28/2024

Roasted Brussels sprouts & eggs recipe
I know Brussels sprouts are traditionally considered a winter vegetable, but I love them any time of year! (I wish we could grow our own, but unfortunately, they don't seem to grow well here - at least in my experience...)

This delicious dish makes a fabulous breakfast, lunch, or simple supper - and it's a great way to enjoy farm-fresh eggs if you have an abundance like we do these days.

Pasture-raised eggs are packed with healthy fats, protein, and vitamins, and as members of the cabbage family, Brussels sprouts have some pretty impressive health chops as well. Some studies have found that eating plenty of of Brussels sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables may help protect against certain cancers, as well as combat high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Add the immune-boosting powers of garlic, along with the digestive aid, fennel seed, and you have a nutrient-packed meal that will nourish your body from head-to-toe!

I could eat this dish as an entire meal, and it's ready in a jiffy, so it's perfect for a busy weekday supper, or a weekend breakfast. It's garlicky, flavorful, and so satisfying! And, if you don't want to heat up the oven, you could also roast the Brussels in an air fryer.

Try out the recipe below - and let me know how you like it!
